Course dates & topics

The next London Eye Course will take place 14-18th Oct 2025.

1. Interactive lectures will take place 14-17th October 2025. Lectures will be held at the Royal Society of Medicine, Central London, UK.

​2. Mock exam:
The Mock exam will take place at Royal Free hospital on 18th Oct 2025.

The mock exam will will follow a similar format to the FRCOphth part 2 new hybrid format.

The London eye course will cover important clinical topics which feature frequently in exams, as well as relevant clinical guidelines and landmark clinical trials.

Previous candidates feedback is instrumental to choice of lecturers who teach on the course. 

All tutors are given a list of previously examined topics on FRCOphth Part 2 exams for their subspecialty, and base their lectures on these topics. The lectures are interactive to maximise candidates' participation and learning.

Based on feedback we have received from candidates, we have made the following change to the course:
1. We will be capping the max number of participants to 30.
2. An ethics and communications skills half day session has been added permanently to the course. This is because numerous candidates are struggling to pass this station in both our Mock exam and the real exam.
3. The strabismus session has now been changed to a uveitis & retina station. This is based on recent feedback from the March 2025 course.

The mock exam is composed of 5 OSCE stations, 5 Viva stations and 1 communication station. London Eye Course mock exam stations closely mimic the FRCOphth Part 2 examination topics but are not identical in format.

Feedback for our previous courses was excellent, and candidates found both the virtual interactive lectures and mock exam very useful.

What will be covered

Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus

​As an examiner for various subspecialties, Mr Jain and Mr Jolly have invaluable knowledge of topics which are asked about in exams, and received excellent feedback previously. Mr Jain is a regular examiner on the FRCOphth Part 2 exams. Pictures and videos of clinical presentations that have come up in previous examinations is a main feature of this session. It is important that candidates read landmark clinical trials (e.g. PEDIG trials) and College guidelines addressing paediatrics and strabismus before attending this session.

Orbits &
​Oculoplastics

​​Orbital diseases can result in rapid irreversible loss of vision, and can often be the result of life-threatening systemic conditions. This is why it features extensively in written and oral exams. It is advised that candidates do some non-Ophthalmic (as well as Ophthalmic) reading on such systemic conditions (e.g. granulomatosis with polyangiitis, lymphoma, thyroid disease). This session will have a strong emphasis on the differing clinical presentations of orbital diseases, and will test candidates' ability to interpret orbital imaging modalities, such as CT, MRI, Ultrasound, etc. The tutor will also go through the assessment and management of oculoplastic conditions, teaching candidates a systematic easy to remember approach to doing so.

Neuro-Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus

​This subspecialty can be a challenge, and is one which tests a number of red flags in the exams. Mr Bremner has run numerous Neuro-Ophthalmology teaching sessions for London trainees sitting exit exams over the past few years. This sessions will cover both neuro-ophthalmology and adult strabismus. It is important that extensive background reading has been done by candidates, to be able to pick up the important clinical signs (e.g. different types of nystagmus). Mr Bremner has been very highly recommended by candidates for neuro-ophthalmology teaching.

Glaucoma

Anterior segment disorders

Medical Retina

This session will cover important glaucoma presentations, particularly ones of which the management is incompletely understood by trainees. There will be a session on interpretation of visual fields, OCT of optic discs, HRT's and optic disc images. Ms Sally Ameen manages complex adult & paediatric glaucoma cases at the Western Eye Hospital, and there will therefore be an emphasis on surgical management of complex glaucoma, and associated complications. Reference will be made to landmark glaucoma trials, particularly ones which have featured in previous exams. Ms Ameen has previously taught on the London Eye Course and received extremely positive feedback.

Strabismus

A new addition to the London Eye Course, now to continue following splendid feedback:

Strabismus: A special focus on commonly examined stations, and how to pass these stations! 

​This will be taught in both Mr Jain and Mr Jolly's teaching sessions.

This will cover corneal, conjunctival and scleral disorders which commonly feature in exit exams. Systemic associations of these disorders will be discussed, as this has also featured on written and oral exams. There will be a dedicated session on interpretation of cornea tomography imaging.

Ethics & Communication

​This session will cover topics which have come up in previous exams. The domains covered are:

2. Communication skills

Ms Rahila Zakir has excellent experience in medical ethics and communication skills, and will be going through important cases for exam topics. She has been an FROphth examiner for many years.

​This session will consist of 3 parts:
1. Landmark clinical trials in medical retina diseases, and what you need to know. This is very important to know, and it recommended that candidates read the major clinical trials and NICE/College guidelines to maximise learning in this session.
2. Interpretation of FFA, Fundus autofluorescence, Red free images, OCT macula imaging and other medical retina imaging modalities.
3.    Electrodiagnostics session.
4. Common topics and questions in FRCOphth Part 2 exam over past 5 years.
